It all starts with the business model.  The simplest definition I know is “The Lifetime Value of a Customer [minus] “The Cost of Acquiring a Customer”

What’s critical is you can’t control the customer or what they value. You can only learn about those and adapt what you do accordingly.

As companies grow they become more systematic in what they do. I’ve identified almost fifty systems companies use. You’re probably doing most of them pretty well, even if you don’t realize it. But a system that works when you have 5 employees often breaks when you have 15. That’s why I developed the grid.
